CONNECTING DOTS BETWEEN THE ARTS, TECHNOLOGY, AND HUMAN INTERACTION

Audio has been the keystone of my diverse technical career and degree programs. I've worked in emerging technology for automotive audio, as a recording studio engineer, and developed interactive audio tools for composers, educators, physical therapists and art installations. I've collaborated with a number of interdisciplinary teams, and taught many college-level courses in audio technology.

UX SOFTWARE ENGINEER - HARMAN INTERNATIONAL

Apr 2020 to present

EPIC team member (Early Pursuits of Innovative Concepts), developing audio concepts for DSP algorithms applied in emerging automotive and consumer audio markets. Responsibilities include DSP using AudioworX, Audiomulch or other audio software, taking acoustic measurements, tuning vehicle audio systems, rapid prototyping, providing customer demos, and combining creativity with technical innovation to drive new interactive audio experiences.

ACOUSTIC SYSTEMS ENGINEER - HARMAN INTERNATIONAL

Feb 2019 to Mar 2020

TechworX team member, tuning automotive audio systems using AudioworX, for optimal frequency and imaging balance from the listening perspective of each seat, for use in a mobile app or vehicle head unit to personalize the listening experience consistently across multiple devices. The process included use of a 6-mic array, real-time analyzers and DSP engines for applying filters, delay and phase correction techniques. I worked with a small team of engineers, tuning over 100 vehicles in a span of 9 months.

PROGRAM CHAIR OF MEDIA ARTS - THE ART INSTITUTE OF MICHIGAN

Jan 2016 to Dec 2019

Campus chair of Media Arts programs including Audio Production BS, Animation BFA, and Photography BFA. Promoted to Chair in December 2017, from adjunct audio faculty since 2016, teaching subjects in acoustics, ear training, synthesis, 5.1, embedded systems, circuits, and human machine interfaces. Often demonstrated phase cancellation using an oscilloscope, the harmonic series, room modes, reflections, EQ, and psychoacoustic topics.

VIRTUAL INSTRUMENT PROGRAMMER - FREELANCE

Mar 2013 to Dec 2017

DSP and UI/UX design work, developing software for professionally recorded audio samples to be triggered and processed through a software interface which allows users to achieve interesting and highly musical results. Required high level of critical listening and timing, interface and user experience design, and taking software from concept to the market. Clients include Cinesamples, Refractor Audio, and Big Fish Audio.

AUDIO ENGINEER - CELLDWELLER PRODUCTIONS

May 2014 to Oct 2016

Software development and embedded support  for composer, Celldweller. Modular analog and digital synthesizer assembly and maintenance, studio setup and acoustic treatment, network data backups, recording and editing audio. Frequent use of GNU toolchain, openOCD, and various types of embedded firmware flashing, use of oscilloscopes, soldering, and electronic diagnostic techniques to build, test, and repair audio equipment.

ADJUNCT FACULTY, INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Mar 2013 to Jun 2014

Taught college level courses with Pro Tools and the Adobe Suite, ranging in audio production, ear training, digital media production, image composition, media distribution, and project management.

INTERACTIVE DESIGNER, HUMAN BIOMECHANICS LAB AT U OF M

May 2012 to Sep 2012

Developed a 3D spatial-gesture based synthesizer using Max/msp which mapped physical movement to sound. Work involved use of Matlab, gesture recognition, and parsing accelerometer or other inertial measurement unit data. The intention was to provide the brain with an aural  link to motor skills, aiding in stroke rehabilitation of motor function. (www.inertialsound.wordpress.com) Also assisted in data collection of 3D motion tracking and metabolic rates of test subjects using specialized equipment.
